On September 17, 2019, the Mason High School soccer team coached by Jacob Derby and Brian Hamlin, came up with their first win against the Haslett Vikings half way through the season. The team came to the final result of 3-2 with goals scored by Junior Josh Madery, Senior Nathan Madery and the game winning goal assisted by Sophomore Matt Gearhart, scored by Sophomore Bleon Jahiri.

“It felt really good to finally catch a dub this year” Junior Eli Gill said, “we have had some hard breaks and mental breakdowns this year but we kept working hard during practice and it is finally paying off.” This game was a battle all the way through, and the players went in knowing it was going to be.

The Bulldogs have had a rough year this season, having a record of 0-9-4 before this game. Even though their season has not gone their way this year, their future is looking bright now. The Bulldogs have played some top tier teams this season and tied with them such as Dexter, Dewit, and Plainwell. “I see us winning districts this year, we still have a chance if we keep playing the way we did against Haslett, Dexter, and Dewitt.” Gill said.

The Mason soccer team has been working hard from the beginning of summer until now and will continue up to November. The Bulldogs are not ready to give up on this year quite yet. The team has 6 more games before Districts, one of those being Okemos, the number one team in the state overall.

There is no way to tell how the Bulldogs are going to do on Saturday night against the Chiefs. There have been nights where the Chiefs look very good, others where they look like a completely different team.

“In my eyes there is always hope for a team to improve and get better, I think this game showed that. I haven’t given up on me or my teammates because I know what every single person on this team is capable of doing”  Nathan Madery said.
