The 2019 Oscar Academy Awards are coming up fast, airing on Sunday February 24. This award ceremony is being held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. This is the 91st annual Oscar ceremony. The awards cover many subjects in the media industry, but the main ones to focus on are Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress. The Best Picture nominations are as follows,  Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice. The nominees for Best Actor are Christian Bale in Vice as Dick Cheney, Bradley Cooper as Jack in A Star is Born, Willem Dafoe as Vincent van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody and Viggo Mortensen as Frank Vallelonga in Green Book. And for the nominees for Best Actress, there is Yalitza Aparicio as Cleodegaria Gutiérrez in Roma, Glenn Close as Joan Castleman in The Wife, Olivia Colman as Anne in The Favourite,  Lady Gaga as Ally Campana in A Star is Born and finally, Melissa McCarthy as Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

We asked some fellow students around the school for their thoughts on the nominees and nominations for these main awards. Senior Dillon Buck answers as follows for the Best Picture nomination, “I think that Bohemian Rhapsody should get the award because it’s a very well put together film and I think it pays tribute to Freddie Mercury in a great way.” Junior Nathan Madery had this to say about the best picture nominations, “I’d say Black Panther, because it had very nice shots and animation and I thought was a very quality film overall.” Asked about the nominees for Best Actor, Madery had this to say, “I’m going to go with Rami Malek, because he was able to take one of the best singers/artists of all time and really bring out the look of Freddie and capture his role perfectly.” Buck also chose Rami as Best Actor, “I think Rami Malek, because he did an amazing job playing and looking the role of Freddie Mercury,” said Buck. Later, another student in the school by the name of Declan Cady was also interviewed. For Best Picture, Declan had this to say, “I think BlackkKlansman is definitely the best nomination for the Best Picture award, it’s Spike Lee’s first movie in a long time, and he’s always been a really great director. The cinematography in the movie is amazing as well as the acting and it also manages to be funny and serious in a perfect way. I also want to say that I don’t think Black Panther should even be nominated, it’s definitely not good enough.” He also said this about the Best Actor award, “I think Rami Malek definitely I would say is the best actor here, the training that he had to go through  and coaching for that roll as Freddie Mercury is very impressive to me and the commitment the role is also very impressive to me. I think he is the most deserving of it.

We did also want to include the Best Actress nominees in the interviews as well because it is an absolutely huge award, but the nominees not everyone was familiar with their rolls when asked. There are 24 media categories that will be covered for the Oscars Award Ceremony  on February 24th, so stay tuned and see if what was said will actually happen at the 91st annual Oscars!
